Last week, Westfield Varsity Softball hosted the Chantilly Chargers and traveled to Oakton High School to conclude the first round of inseason district play.
The Bulldogs soared over the Chargers last Tuesday, continuing their impermeable defense, fielding a perfect game. Pitcher Morgan Mills, 10, recording the win for Westfield, threw just 83 pitches. After taking a small lead of 1-0 in the first inning, the bats against Chantilly began to heat up in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits. This strong momentum carried through the fourth inning, where Westfield added four runs to the scoreboard. Four Bulldogs produced a multi hit game, adding to the grand total of 14 hits against the Chargers. The final score of the Chantilly-Westfield game was 11-1 through six innings.
Westfield traveled to Vienna to face the Oakton Cougars, the only team they hadn’t faced yet in the Concorde District. The Bulldogs fell behind 0-2 early in the game, allowing Oakton to score in the first inning, but came back to grasp the lead in the third inning, making the score 3-2. From there, Westfield kept the lead through the game, adding three to their score in the fifth inning, and each team picking up three runs in the seventh. Five extra base hits contributed to the much-needed 9-6 win for the Bulldogs, who batted .432 as a team against the Cougars. Mills pitched another efficient game, with 82 pitches through all seven innings.
Westfield will finish the first round of districts in second place with a 4-1 record and will complete the season with a rematch against each team in the Concorde District. Rival Centreville High School travels to Francis L. Dall Sports Complex Thursday night for Westfield Softball’s next matchup
