Regardless of if you play a sport in high school, being a senior is one of the best years of your life. It’s the best for a number of reasons; participating in senior night, practicing for the walk across the stage, getting to leave class early, maybe even getting to miss school days. It is just such a significant moment in so many people’s lives. Playing a sport during that time makes it that much better, for example, being a cheerleader.
The seniors on the Westfield Cheer Team have been working extremely hard this year. They all hope to lead the team to states this year. Carolina DeLury, 12, said, “We’ve all been
working really hard this year, so we’re really excited for competition” Ariyah Culbreath, 12, stated “Since freshman year, I feel I’ve greatly improved, both in confidence and overall skill.”
Most seniors have an idea of what college they want to attend, if not a list of multiple. Culbreath said “I’m looking at a couple schools, but I’m definitely applying to the University of Kentucky.” DeLury disclosed, “I don’t really have a dream college, but I’m really interested in the Carolina schools, such as NC State”. Alyssa Minogue, 12, mentioned “I plan on going to James Madison University (JMU) for college”.
Cheer is a very difficult and dangerous sport, but it’s definitely one of my favorites. As someone who has played soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, and probably others that I don’t even remember, I personally think cheerleading is a favorite. The seniors on the Westfield High School cheer team think the same thing. All in all, playing a sport in highschool is something that everyone should experience at least one year of their highschool life. Scholarship offers, lifelong friendships, amazing memories, it’s just such a great thing to experience. If you ever think about trying out for a sport at Westfield High School, talk to Terry Towle, the student activities director! She can give you information on tryouts, physicals, requirements, etc.
