As you sweep the crusty popcorn off the floor working at an AMC, a group of people stumble past you and into the theater. You look up at the movie that’s being displayed.
“A Minecraft Movie?” you exclaim to your coworkers. “We do not need another needless adaptation”. Suddenly a cataclysmic noise erupts from the theatre. An employee dashes out of the theatre screeching, and tumbling over in the process. Limply, they crawl to you and claw at your pants. “ I… am.. Steve” they whisper out weakly before they collapse. Your heart stops as you look up at the theatre. Bleakly as tears run down your face, you enter the theatre. The air reeks of sweat, the floor engulfed in a mountain of popcorn, and slushies being thrown at the screen. Next to you, people riding on each other’s shoulders, and the moment Jack Black says “Chicken Jockey”, the theatre explodes and devolves into a black hole.
Besides being a nightmare for theatre employees, “A Minecraft Movie” is a movie adaption of the video game “Minecraft”. It was released on April 4, 2025, but it had notable recognition beforehand because of its trailer. When the teaser first released it had a lot of backlash for being a mix of animation and live action, along with phrases being taken from it and put on other areas of social media.
Eventually, once the movie was released all hell broke loose. It became a trend to go to the movie theatre and record the audience’s reactions to the movie. In response, people would applaud and scream during the movie, while also misbehaving. This led to law enforcement making an announcement and people getting detained.
I went to the movie a week after it was released with my brother. The theatre was relatively more tame than the ones posted online, but during certain lines in the movie, people would still yell and applaud.
The movie had a decent plot and enjoyable characters with many action scenes. A couple downsides was its “interesting” animation style, and reliance on popular actors. The whole movie felt like waiting to hear and line and say it out. Even though it was a little repetitive, it was still entertaining. Overall, this movie is a 6.8/10
