Bhavya Guromoorthy is an extremely talented and hard-working individual. Bhavya diligently balances being a student and a tutor at Kumon learning center, passionately serving the youth of her community while earning money. Bhavya also excels at extracurricular activities. She’s a dedicated member of DECA and was given the principal award. Along with DECA, she is the president of the Creative Stories Club. A new club at Westfield High School, that is dedicated to bringing together students with a passion for art and storytelling together to create story books. Bhavya has a passion for art specifically for graphic design and has had an exhibit at the Westfield Pyramid Art Show for two years in a row now. All of these qualities make Bhavya a model student who deserves some recognition for her hard work and dedication.
Bhavya has been doing digital art for a little more than 9 years now. She discovered her passion for graphic design, however when her Digital art & design teacher Mrs. Whiteash introduced the concept to her class for an assignment. She derives joy from figuring out how to make elements look interesting on a page and how to visually persuade people to buy a product or service. Bhavya will be pursuing this interest and is planning to attend Virginia Tech University and major in Creative Technologies and Digital Marketing. For her career, she wants to be a freelance illustrator but start off working for a company and eventually become independent.
Along with digital art, Bhavya credits her time in DECA with helping her further her understanding of what she wants to do in life post-high school. DECA gave her a better understanding of the business world and helped her become a more confident and persuasive speaker which in turn will help her in the graphic design field. Along with DECA Bhavya is a part of multiple other clubs: National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, SPHS, Creative Stories Club, Beta Club, College partnership program, and Track & Field. Bhavya is the president of Creative Stories Club and took over after her friend Huyen, the original creator, graduated last year. Because she was a part of the club since its inception she felt very close to it and decided to continue it and hopes that it will grow bigger one day.
Bhavya also works part-time along with all her extracurriculars and school work. It is difficult to balance but she says that working alongside school taught her valuable time management skills and forces her to get things done ahead of time. Her job as a tutor at Kumon also allows her to explore her passion as she runs a social media account for her center and makes newsletters. Bhavya has a lot of responsibilities at home as well but she tries to get her work done early so she doesn’t become swamped with deadlines. She utilizes her time in between classes or any downtime she gets in the day to complete assignments or do extracurricular tasks so she won’t have a lot of schoolwork to complete after her work shifts.
Bhavya’s advice for any upcoming freshman is to try as many things as you can during your first year. As time goes on and your workload becomes more intense you’ll have little time for extracurriculars so it’s good to explore now rather than later. Trying out different clubs will help you get an idea of what you’re passionate about and maybe help you decide what your path will be past High School.
