In the competitive world of high school sports, few athletes manage to stand out. This month, we have a certain athlete who definitely caught our eye. Ladies and gentlemen, our Athlete of the Issue, Jonah Meyer!
Jonah Meyer is an exceptional athlete here at Westfield High School. He has been on the baseball team for 3 years, making varsity every year. His commitment to the team is visible, and he puts his all into every practice. While he is heavily committed to his sport, he is also commited to his studies, with a 4.0 weighted gpa!
Very few high school athletes end up committing to their sport for college. Jonah Meyer has committed to Washington and Jefferson College to play baseball! Jonah Meyer, 12, says “It feels great to be committed, because now I don’t really have to worry about college and all the stress”. Honestly, I respect it. No more stressing about college?? Yes please.
Recovering from injuries is hard, especially so close to the end of your high school career. There’s a large physical and even mental burden that comes with recovery. Jonah says, “It affected me deeply, mentally and physically, having to rehab for 6 months before being able to play baseball again, but I can feel that it’s going to be worth it to come back for my senior year”. He had his surgery January 30th, 2024. When asked if he feels like he came back stronger, he mentions that it’s unclear because he is still in recovery, but says that he feels like he will come back stronger.
A support system is something that any great athlete needs, whether you’re at a professional, college, or high school level. Lenah Meyer, 10, is Jonah’s younger sister. Lenah says, “I’m really proud of him, because I can see his progress and hard work and dedication he has put into everything”. I asked her how she feels about the fact that he is committed and leaving home soon, and she said “I’m sad that he’s leaving home soon because it definitely will be different without him because we do spend a good amount of time together, but I am very proud of him especially since his junior year he was out of baseball for the whole season because of an injury”. She says that she’s very proud of how far he has come, and how he was able to overcome his injury.
All in all, Jonah Meyer is an amazing athlete, teammate, brother, and son. From personal experience, I can say that Jonah is extremely kind and fun to talk to. He exhibits extreme perseverance and passion, truly inspiring everyone around him. I can’t wait to see what he goes on to do in the future. We’ll all be cheering you on Jonah!!
