. During course selection, there can be a lot of different classes to choose from. Here’s why you should choose Studio Art as one of your electives.
. The art program can introduce you to a lot of new art competitions and opportunities, one major competition being Scholastics Art and Writing. Enrolling in an art class allows students to participate in the school-wide art show, and if they’re a junior or a senior, they can join National Art Honors Society.
. “I believe taking an art class not only allows for an outlet for creativity and emotion but by doing so will also allow for more emotional regulation and artistic recognition in other aspects of your life. Even if you are already an artist outside of school, taking an art class can further your talents as you get so much more peer review as well as guidance through professionals,” Maggie Minks, 12, National Art Honors Society Officer, “The Westfield art department is one of, if not the best, departments in the county. All of our teachers are so kind and caring as well as insanely qualified and talented. We are so lucky to also have such diversity in our art classes as we are one of the few who offer visual journalism and jewelry as an elective.”
. Art provides people with a creative outlet and it has a light workload that’s easy to manage if you’re taking a lot of other AP classes.
. “I like art classes, it allows me to be creative in a controlled environment, like we’re still given projects to do, but I’m allowed freedom to create what I want and use the colors I want. And, it allows me to be creative in the very rigid school environment,” Amritha Sundarrajan, 10.
. Next year, Studio Art 3 will change to be an honors course with a 0.5 Weight added. If getting a high GPA is really important to you, you can get into art classes with a GPA boost in a few years of being in the art program.
. “Studio art is one of those classes that’s kind of under the radar as far as why you take the class. I think people take it thinking that they’re really good at art and so that they wanna take it or they wanna get better at art, they can take it, but really it’s about learning how to think through doing. So that’s what I think the secret power of our class is having time to think during the school day,” Ms. Florimonte, Studio Art Teacher.
. Studio art helps you clear your head, and honestly there’s nothing more calming than carefully picking out an outfit before going to school, forgetting you have art class, and then spilling paint on your clothes.
