. Sophomore year, the epitome of procrastination. A year where many high-achieving students find themselves burnt-out and overstretched.
. There are many factors at fault for this phenomenon commonly known as sophomore slump. Some say they locked in too hard their freshman year and didn’t have the same energy their sophomore year. Others blame a harder class schedule as only a crazy person would argue that freshman biology is more difficult than chemistry. Unless, of course, your biology teacher was Mr. Robinson; well then, your feelings are valid, and I hear you.
. Alina Rashid, 11, reminisces on her sophomore year which she believes was “much worse” than her freshman year: “I had a fourth-quarter academic downfall.” Furthermore, Rashid explains, “I think whoever put out the [sophomore] schedules was on something.”
. The sophomore slump is a serious, career-ending condition that cannot be taken lightly. This condition may cause lifelong complications, so it’s important to know the warning signs.
. Typical symptoms of the sophomore slump include extensive procrastination (through various methods, such as social media usage, dog walking, etc.), dropping athletic commitments (though dropping a fall sport after freshman year may have causes other than the sophomore slump, as fall sports are toxic AF and we all know it), and short bursts of an IDGAF attitude even though you’re an “I-really-need-an-A’ type of person.
. Other warning signs include the intense urge to say, “skibidi toilet,” “type-sh!t,” “ultimate opp,” and “D1-[insert hobby here],”.
. If you think you or a friend may suffer from the sophomore slump, reach out to your counselor and seek help immediately.
