As we end this school year, it would be fun to talk about some of the most emerging sports stars over the last school year. As the sports world evolves, new talents emerge, and these rising stars not only exhibit their extraordinary skills but also bring young minds and perspectives together in their respective sports.
Emma Raducanu’s impressive rise in tennis is nothing short of spectacular. Born in Toronto to a Romanian father and a Chinese mother and raised in the UK, her multifaceted background has really shaped her identity to the athlete she has become today. She began playing tennis early at age five, and her breakthrough came in 2021 when she reached the fourth round at the prestigious Major tournament Wimbledon as a wildcard and later by history by winning the US Open, becoming the first qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles title. Her victory inspired many young girls and boys, and marked her a future star in tennis.
Off of the tennis court though, she has become a global ambassador for tennis, involved in a lot of different charities, and promoting diversity in sports. Raducanu is also an advocate for mental health, openly discussing the pressures pro athletes have to face. Despite all of these challenges, her resilience and bravery show a promising future. Raducanu’s ability to bridge different cultures and inspire people from different backgrounds make her a very influential figure in the world of sports, making her poised to achieve many great things both on and off the tennis court.
Cade Cunningham has quickly made himself into a rising star in the NBA, showcasing his remarkable versatility and leadership on the basketball court. Drafted first overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2021 NBA Draft, he has sure lived up to the hype with his crazy good playmaking, scoring, and especially his defense. On a historically bad Pistons team, he has been their one bright spot and is their cornerstone in the Pistons’ rebuilding efforts. His very impressive transition from college basketball, where he was one of the top players in the country at Oklahoma State, to the pro level highlights his maturity and potential to become one of the league’s biggest rising stars along with others such as Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, and Nikola Jokic.
Cunningham, just like Radacunu, has openly spoken about the importance of mental health in sports, advocating for better support systems for athletes at every level. His discussions about the pressures athletes face in pro sports have helped to destroy the stigma around mental health issues, encouraging young people to seek help. Additionally, Cunningham’s community involvement and dedication to the development of youths in sports has shown his commitment to making a positive impact beyond just basketball.
