The Westfield and South Lakes Varsity Softball game saw just one run scored, and it was not until extra innings.
Each player on the Westfield roster engaged in a strong defensive game. Starting pitcher Morgan Mills, 10, threw an extremely efficient game, just 80 pitches in eight innings, 55 of which being strikes. Mills also gave up no runs or walks. Infielders Izzy Lalli, 11, Rylee Schmid, 10, and Hannah Burstein, 10, recorded two outs with a 4-3-6 double play. Ciara Ramsey, 11, made a clutch diving play late in the game to save Westfield from a position with Seahawk runners in scoring position. In total, Westfield left six South Lakes runners on base.
The scoreboard was filled with zeroes on both sides the entire game, bringing the Bulldogs and Seahawks past the seventh inning. With each team beginning with a runner on second base in the inning in extra innings, Jaelynn Vinaya, 11, caught the South Lakes runner stealing third to clear the bases and put an out on the board. The Bulldogs were able to shut the Seahawks yet again in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Carly Austin, 11, laid down a sac bunt to move the Westfield baserunner, Praharsha Gopanapalli, 11, to third. With two outs, and an 0-2 count, it came down to Lalli, who then hit a line drive to center field to score the winning RBI for Westfield, winning the game for the Bulldogs 1-0.
The Bulldogs have been dominant in districts so far with a 2-1 record in the Concorde. Next on the list for Westfield is Chantilly High School and Oakton High School. Follow Westfield Softball here to keep up with their scores and schedules.
