In a chilly Friday night matchup, Westfield Varsity Softball took early control of their game against the Centreville Wildcats, setting the pace with a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, the Bulldogs tacked another run onto their lead. By the top of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-0. The Wildcats began to creep back into the game in the bottom of the fourth, contributing two runs of their own to the score. Westfield then displayed full control of the game, holding Centreville to two runs while scoring four runs in the fifth inning and eight in the sixth inning.
With a final score of 16-2, Westfield dominated the rivalry through the accumulation of 20 base hits, five of which being extra base hits, and boasting a fielding percentage of .964 as a team. Each player in the lineup contributed at least one hit in the win. Starting pitcher Morgan Mills, 10, threw 91 pitches in six innings, striking out eight batters and allowing just three hits. The Bulldogs have a strong start to regular season district play and will hopefully continue this momentum into the remainder of their season.
