Westfield Varsity Softball played well in South Lakes’s spring break invitational, sweeping on the first day and losing the final game on the second. They ended the invitational with a 2-1 record, picking up their first two wins of the season.
On day one, Westfield faced the Meridian Mustangs and the West Potomac Wolverines.
Westfield took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Westfield would hold their lead until the fifth, when Meridian fought back to tie the game at 8-8, resulting in extra innings. In the top of the sixth, the Mustangs picked up a run, but the Bulldogs came back to win the game 10-9 with a clutch single from Ciara Ramsey, 11, who scored on a passed ball, and a walk-off sac fly from Morgan Mills, 10. The Bulldogs drew a total of six walks in the game and were extremely active on the basepaths, recording ten stolen bases.
Westfield dominated in the game against West Potomac, boasting a 9-1 lead in the second inning. From there, they only added to their lead to produce a final score of 13-2. The Bulldogs combined for 11 hits and drew 7 walks throughout the game. Ramsey pitched a solid game, throwing all five innings and allowing one earned run while striking out five West Potomac batters.
The Bulldogs played a tough game against Battlefield High School the second day of the invitational, their only game of the day. Battlefield pitched a strong game, allowing just five hits and one walk throughout the game. Westfield picked up their only four runs in the game due to a no-doubter grand slam by Carly Austin, 11. The Bulldogs ultimately fell 4-14 to the Bobcats, bringing an end to their winning streak.
