According to statistics, E is the most used letter in the alphabet.
Really.
Think about how many times you’ve used the letter e day to day. T is also a very important letter in the alphabet and in everyday life(as you can’t say my name without the letter T). One day, a mad man did something unheard of and combined these two wonderful parts of the English language, creating E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial.
E.T. is a film made by film legend Steven Spielburg, and is considered a childhood classic. So much so that Atari, a pretty big game company at the time, decided to make a game based on the film.
This game was… Revolutionary.
Rocco Woodwall(a Google user) states, “When I was at the worst in my life, I would turn to E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.”
Indie Gamer Chick states, “It’s a really bad game.” While that may sound negative, it was actually Opposite Day when they wrote that. Really.
After seeing those reviews you must be wondering about the controls and gameplay, obviously. The controls are simple; your joystick moves you up, down, left and right, and just like in the movie, you can fly. By holding the red button on your controller, E.T. will extend his neck like a giraffe and fly into the air—Truly a sight to behold. In E.T., the goal is to collect pieces of a phone so E.T. can go home. To find those phone pieces, just jump into the nearest hole in the ground and pray that a phone piece is in it. If it’s not, you need to fly out; however, sometimes you can’t fly out. While that may sound hopeless, it’s actually an allegory for life because sometimes life throws you a curveball… And you get stuck in a hole. Just like in the movie, there are agents trying to capture you and make you a lab rat for government experiments. Did I mention that they can not only fly by using an invisible jetpack, but they fly better than E.T.? This truly tells us how far technology has come.
After all that riveting gameplay, you may be wondering how the game did in face of the public’s opinions.
Nin Ja(another Google user) states that the game “requires a high IQ to understand.”
Another random google user (Holden Ellis) opines, “This game is the ABSOLUTE BEST thing in existence.” With all those positive reviews it’s no wonder it did so well. In fact it did so well that when the game slowly started to die out, Atari dug a 40 foot hole in the ground in some random empty lot in Alamongordo, New Mexico and buried over 700,000 copies of the game in remembrance. The game reached new heights in gaming and was so popular that Atari “retired” from the big leagues because of how much money they got from this game and “donated” $536 million dollars to the bank.
You would think this would be the game of the century but some critics disagree. People argue that Lord of the Rings:Gollum or Balan Wonderworld should be the game of the century because they offer more interesting gameplay, but I digress.
If it wasn’t obvious E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial sucks. It may have killed Atari. So remember whenever you play a bad game that it’s probably better than E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. Peace out my fellow gaming bulldogs. And mom.
