Westfield High School’s football team has achieved great success in the past two decades, winning five state titles, three of which had perfect records. In 2016, they secured their fourth state championship with a thrilling double overtime victory over Oscar Smith High School, finishing the season with a 13-2 record. In 2006, under the guidance of future NFL quarterback Mike Glennon, one of the notable Westfield football alumni, the Bulldogs achieved another perfect season including a 28-16 win over the Chantilly Chargers, and a shutout of their cross-town rival Centreville (33-0) in the regular season finale. Once in the state tournament, Glennon was able to lead the Bulldogs to an unexpected victory over heavily favored, and long-time football powerhouse, Oscar Smith in the semi-finals and went on to beat Woodbridge in the finals earning their second state title in school history.
After that successful season, they won three more state titles, producing notable players like Glennon, his brother Sean Glennon, and Eddie Royal. [Mike] Glennon continued his football journey at North Carolina State University from 2008 to 2012, where he played alongside future NFL Hall of Famer Russell Wilson before taking over as starter.
On April 26, 2013 Glennon was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 3rd Round of the NFL draft and went on to play for 10 years with 7 different teams. Following his retirement, he joined Lee & Associates in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, as a Broker.
Royal, considered one of the greatest offensive players in recent decades, played college football at Virginia Tech university from 2004-2007, earning accolades like First-team All-ACC in 2007 and Second-team All-ACC in 2006. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft and played for multiple NFL teams, accumulating impressive stats before retiring after the 2016 season. As of 2022, Royal held at least seven Broncos franchise records and now works as a network host on the ACC Network’s football show, ACC Huddle.
Glennon’s brother, Sean, also attended Virginia Tech and had a successful career. Although he did not find success in the NFL, he has built a career as a Senior Vice President with over 6 years of experience as a loan trust officer at Home Savings and Trust Mortgage.
Noah Kim, a standout quarterback at Westfield High School, was one of the biggest contributors to the school’s back-to-back-to-back state titles. He led his team to an impressive 41-2 record in his three years as a starter, setting a school record of 6,756 passing yards, 87 touchdowns, and 1,056 rushing yards with 23 touchdowns. In 2020, Kim earned the title of Northern Virginia Player of the Year.
Kim committed to Virginia Tech in 2019 but later flipped his commitment to Michigan State University in October of the same year. In 2022, he started as the backup but showed promise by throwing his first career touchdown and finishing the season with 174 yards and 3 touchdowns, with no interceptions. In 2023, Kim was named the week one starter and led his team to a 31-7 win over Central Michigan University. He has established himself as a solid quarterback in Division 1 football.
Kim joins the list of professional athletes from Westfield High School and could potentially become the 6th football alumni to play in the NFL, following the footsteps of Royal, Glennon, and Eugene Asante, a current player at Auburn University.
Everyone who attends Westfield games continues to see the legacy the school has on the football team, and the family football has built with its players and staff. Westfield has continued to become a Virginia football legacy and this is destined to continue for years to come, because of its unique legacy, and the compassionate fanbase surrounding the school. As of October of 2023, as Westfield continues to be a football powerhouse, they continue to produce more NFL-caliber players maintaining their level of success for years to come.
