One of my favorite ways to escape reality is to write. Writing helps me feel better and relieve the pressure that builds up inside. I get my journal out, pop in my earbuds, turn on my daily playlist, and begin to write.
Writing has many benefits. One can write about all of their emotions, ranging from the best to the worst. By writing about how one truly feels inside, it can reduce the amount of stress and guilt they kept to themselves for a while. It also clears the minds of those who tend to worry constantly and overthink often. It also helps to give creative ideas in many forms or literature.
According to Positive Psychology, clear writing is a symbol of clear thinking. Professional writers know how to communicate with the audience, how to write easily understandable content, and when it is right to leave unnecessary details. Writing is the most beneficial skill for journalists, speakers, and business owners. Anyone with any job can learn something by spending time honing their writing skills.
Classes that involve practicing these skills, like journalism, can improve one’s writing greatly. In the class of journalism, staff writers write articles about many topics, and inform the students of Westfield High School with the news and see how their opinions differ from other peoples’ point of view.
“I think writing can help with your mental health because it can help express your emotions without talking about them directly. Writing can also be used as a form of escapism, even if things are tough in your real life, you can indulge yourself in your writing and create reality as you desire,” Alina Rashid, 11, confidently claims while working on her article.
“I believe that being able to write does help with my mental health. Some ways that writing helps my mental health is by allowing me to vent and letting all my feelings and thoughts go on to the paper. It also helps me calm down when I’m feeling stressed and sometimes even helps me find solutions to problems I didn’t know I was having. Writing overall is something that is fun for me and continues to help me with my mental health!“ proudly states Meghan Odi, 10.
Writing is also an important part of classes that are based on English subjects, like AP Lang, AVID, Creative Writing, and more. These courses can often affect large portions of students, since they are taking advanced levels of English classes to become successful in the future. Writing excellent essays for college courses can raise the chances of getting into a good college/university.
According to LinkedIn, studies have shown that writing can also increase a person’s memory. By writing down notes, it can help the person remember thoughts and ideas. From Positive Psychology, writing is a widely used non-pharmacological tool for coaching and counseling and the treatment of mental illness. Studies show that by capturing our thoughts and feelings on paper, “Participants often reveal a considerable range and depth of emotional trauma.” Not only that, but research into gratitude journaling suggests that “study participants who regularly drew their attention to aspects of their lives that made them feel blessed increased their positivity,” this portrays the how writing can help a person.
If an individual is struggling with their mental health, they can write down the unpleasant thoughts and reduce the amount of guilt and stress they are dealing with. For those who are taking courses that involve large amounts of writing, they can write essays with parlance, so they can have a bright future ahead of them.
